About JAMI

JAMI logo

JAMI is the only Jewish charity concerned exclusively with mental illness, with the impact it has on the lives of those who suffer from it, including their families and all who care for them.

JAMI was founded in 1989 by parents, relatives and friends of people with mental ill health. It offers a range of culturally specific services for Jewish people who have a severe and enduring mental illness.

The charity is recovery orientated and is committed to working alongside statutory services to provide a high quality community-based service which enables people to maximise their potential and take control of their own recovery.

JAMI House

JAMI provides essential day care, social work, advice, information and social activities for people affected by mental illness, including their families and carers.

JAMI House is open to Jewish people over the age of 18, affected by enduring mental health problems. Opportunities are offered for those who feel isolated and vulnerable to meet others who may share common difficulties. JAMI House provides a warm, welcoming place for people to spend time, where they can meet new friends in a supportive and non-judgemental stimulating environment. The objective is to help people achieve more independence and regain their confidence.

Once a simple assessment procedure has been completed, members can call in to meet others, chat, have a coffee, play a game or watch TV. There are also a wide range of activities to choose from, such as Art Gallery and Museum visits, Photography, Self Defence, Pottery and many more.

JAMI Outreach

HOSPITAL VISITS

JAMI’s Outreach Programme continues to expand with the introduction of HOSPITAL and HOSTEL VISITS.

JAMI has recruited a group of young professionals who together with Brian Weisman (Outreach co-ordinator) are visiting Jewish patients in psychiatric units.  Training and group supervision is organised on a regular basis.

Befriending Service

Many people with mental health difficulties have very restricted social lives. Even if they attend a day centre or go to work, once at home, and evening in front of the TV is often all they can expect.

The JAMI Befriending Service will carefully match volunteers and service  users to share in a social recreation programme.  The purpose of the project is to help otherwise isolated people make use of local, social, cultural and educational facilities within thier area and living skills.

Volunteers are required to help JAMI provide this much needed service.

If you would like to volunteer for this service, please contact Tanya Harris at our head office on 020 8458 2223

Volunteers

JAMI is continuously on the lookout for new volunteers. As the JAMI programme and range of services increase, so does the need for new volunteers.

We are looking for enthusiastic, dynamic and committed people to work alongside the JAMI staff. New volunteer recruits will be given regular training and supervision, if necessary, so that they will always feel a valued and informed member of our team.

Please come and join us. See the Contact section of this site where you can either register or find the number of JAMI House. You can telephone us at any time for more information about volunteering.

Volunteer areas of activity:

  • Working closely with JAMI members who have a mental health problem.
  • Visiting members who live in hostels or who have admitted to hospital.
  • Helping at JAMI House Day Centre, where members enjoy a variety of activities in a safe and caring environment. Offering friendship and support, volunteers provide an invaluable service to members.
  • Helping at JAMI Charity Shop with the sorting and retail of our merchandise. The shop is a valued source of income to JAMI and could not operate without the dedication and support of our volunteers.
  • The raising of much needed funds by either joining an existing fund-raising committee or by starting a new one. Events that are organised enable us to continue as well as expand our services.
  • General ongoing but equally essential tasks such as hosting Friday night and Festival meals at JAMI House, assisting with administration and helping with Flag Days.

Volunteers can either make a regular commitment, or offer to be called on from time to time. Volunteers can and do make a real difference to the lives of the members with whom they work.
